this is pasted from an email I sent my friend. ignore anything that doesn't apply:
-=Torrents=-
1. DL utorrent from http://www.utorrent.com/download.php
-=RELEASE SITES=-
http://www.vcdquality.com/
http://www.theisonews.com/
http://www.nforce.nl/
2. check release sites for really new stuff. Release sites prevent you from downloading bogus files and they can help you to search better. ex: the release site has a listing for:
Smokin Aces (2006) *SVCD* and the group is HafVCD. So you can narrow things down by searching for Smokin Aces HafVCD.
**The only site I use regularly is VCDquality.com, they have ratings too so that you know you aren't getting crap.
-=TORRENT SITES=-
http://www.isohunt.com/ (best selection and most *trackers for torrents)
http://www.torrentspy.com/ (decent selection and comments from others who have the files)
http://www.mininova.com/ (large selection but site slow at times)
http://thepiratebay.org/ (best for software)
Many more listed at: http://del.icio.us/bigjohnny/torrents
* A tracker is a server that tracks who has the file. More trackers usually equates to better faster downloading because you get a larger choice of others to download from.
* when looking at the lists of downloads, look for the highest number of Seeds. Some sites let you reorganize the list by seeds if you click on the S. S=Seeds (people who have the complete file). L or D=Leechers (people that are downloading it now)
**I use torrentspy to search, read the comments and then get the torrent from isohunt usually.
-=VIDEO PLAYERS=-
http://mpui.sourceforge.net/ (MPUI - the one I use majority of the time, plays anything!)
http://www.videolan.org/ (VLC - I mainly use it when mpui isn't loud enough)
**The reason I never use windows media player is because it requires codecs and can give you viruses either while the codecs are downloaded or from pop-up windows. Trust me MPUI will play anything, even RM, BIN, VOB, MOV which usually require realplayer and quicktime.
-=TIPS=-
* Virus Scan everything you download and update your virus definitions at least weekly, I update mine daily. If you didn't know, you get free antivirus and antispyware software from the army. Go to AKO and click Self Service>Antivirus Services in the green menu bar.
* Avoid WMV movies, they are rarely viewable without paying for a license and sometimes they are trojans. If you really want to try one, at least use MPUI or VLC.
* Help the filesharing community by seeding for awhile after you download. Seeding allows others to download the file from you
-=WHAT IS BITTORRENT=-
