The nicotine and alchohol go directly to your baby.

If you breastfeed, you continue to be "a little bit pregnant" in some ways, a little bit "not your own person". Mainly, you have to be careful what you ingest, and you have to keep up the extra good nutrition.

Smoking around your infant is very harmful whether you're breastfeeding or not. If you must smoke, please do so outside away from your baby.

Drinking an occasional glass of wine will NOT affect your baby! Breast feeding is different from being pregnant. Alcohol crosses freely across the placenta, but very little of it goes into breast milk. As long as you limit yourself to a glass or two, there's no reason why you can't feed the baby.

A good rule of thumb: If you are tipsy, don't breast feed. If you're not, your blood alcohol level should be low enough that it won't affect the baby. There's also no reason to "pump and dump." If you do find yourself a bit wobbly, just wait until you're back to normal to feed the baby. When it's out of your system, it'll be out of your breast milk.

I think all of the people who insist that we have to be paranoid about our diets are just discouraging some mothers from breast feeding. You do need plenty of good, nutritious food, but some people go too far. You can have an occasional drink. You can have an occasional cup of coffee. You can eat spicy foods. You can take an aspirin or a tylenol. (In fact, very few medicines are forbidden during breast feeding, though you should always tell your doctor or pharmacist that you are nursing.)

Every baby is different, and if a baby is sensitive to a certain food, you will figure it out very quickly. My baby can't handle beans or artificial sweetener. My friend's baby is fine with beans and artificial sweetener, but gets gas with onions. That doesn't mean that NO mother should ever eat beans or artificial sweetener or onions. It means that you tailor your diet to your baby.

well your baby will get addicted to the nicotine and have with drawls from it also . If you are smoking or drinking then i would formula feed . The alcohol can cause brain damage and make your child more septible to ADD OR ADHD when he gets older . everything goes through your milk just like if your pregnant . Be smart and give your baby the best . If you choose to do these things then formula feed .
There was a lady that answered to pump your milk out it will stay in your milk as long as alcohol stays in your blood stream which i believe is 48-78 hours depending on how much you drank . You cannot pump it out . Anyway good luck .

My sister is pregnant right now and and she smokes. Her doctor told he that the amount of nicotine that passed to the breast milk is minimal and even with the nicotine the breast milk is still 100 times better than formula. Drinking a small amount of wine is not really bad, I mean you can't sit back and drink a bottle, but a SMALL glass won't hurt anything. If you want to have some drinks pump before hand so that you will have enough milk for your baby for while you are drinking and 12 hours afterward, and then spend the next 12 hours after you drink pumping and discarding the milk, after that you are fine to breastfeed again.

And I add: Yeah, granted smoking isn't good for you. Assuming if you are smoking now you were smoking when you were pregnant also. So, your baby was born addicted to nicotine. As long as you are breastfeeding it is still getting small amounts of nicotine. You breast milk IS still better for you baby than "cow's" milk. Formula is processed cow's milk that people give to their babies. Pretty gross huh. Breast milk is made for human babies and even with the presence of nicotine it still has all of the benefits as without nicotine. It is the best milk for brain development, and your baby's immune system. Just don't smoke in the house or the car with your baby, smoke outside or in a well ventilated area. And always wash your hands after smoking, because you don't want your baby tasting the cigarettes on your hands.

I think if you intend to continue smoking, you shouldn't breastfeed your baby! Cos it is no good for the baby, and it's just like smoking while pregnant! Both harmful.. But if occasionally drink 1 glass of wine before breastfeed, i think should be ok. But do not drink too much and often. COs whatever food or drink u take, will all go to the baby..

Its worse to be a 'passive smoker' which is what your MAKING your baby become when you hold him/her so close to you....(I used to smoke and once I gave up I realized how horribly strong the smell is-my partner did not quit- I cannot stand the smell any more)
I suggest if you decide not to quit smoking that you need to literally shower and change your clothes when your baby wants to be fed, also brush your teeth.
AS for wine...unless your having more than one-two glasses it should not affect your baby (mind you EVERYTHING you do affects your baby to some degree) But even a mid wife will tell you that minimal amounts will actually reach your baby.

You just need to make personal choices as to how you want your baby to be as an adult....he/she will find ciggie smoke as a familiar smell later in life...something that reminds him of his mum, and therefore more likely to smoke too.

I don't know exactly what happens with smoke but any alcohol goes straight to the milk. If you plan on breastfeeding after the alcohol you have to wait at least 8 hours so that the alcohol will be out of your system.

Do you mean, sit there, nursing, and puffing on a cancer stick at the same time? Do you want your child to get asthma, or cancer, or some other disease because of your bad habit? Please, don't smoke around the little one. And as for wine, I didn't do that with my child either. I would not reccommend it though, because, again, the effects on the child, you don't want them becoming a person with alcoholic tendencies at such a young age. No offense, but please, use your brain-don't do these things with your little one still nursing. Take care.

You pass everything you ingest along to your baby in your breast milk. If you eat something a little spicy, baby can get a tummy ache from it. My daughter was very sensitive to any changes in my diet when I breastfed her. It's not forever. You can make the sacrifice for your baby. It's worth it.

I tried coffee once, and baby got very cranky!
