Firstly (as a response to the other people answering this), potassium nitrate is not an explosive (but is commonly used in gunpowder). You're thinking of ammonium nitrate which is highly explosive when mixed with some combustive agent (usually diesel fuel).

Potassium nitrate is usually used as fertilizer, but can be used in fireworks and other combustibles. It is commonly mixed with powdered sugar to make smoke bombs.

Potassium nitrate is more commonly known as saltpetre.

It's used for pickling and curing meats. In the spice section of the supermarket. Then you're gong to try making something using an internet recipe that will result in a smoky, sizzling mess. Or you'll try the stovetop recipe and it'll get away from you because they didn't warn how easily that happens, and you'll burn out your parents' kitchen at a minimum. If you even get that far, because they'll grill you at the checkout and ask why someone your age is pickling meats, or they'll laugh you out of the store because the other reason for wanting it is to curb your sexual appetite. No matter what happens in the store, you may eventually find out why gunpowder manufacturing requires hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in the plant, and why we leave the Chinese put fireworks together and buy them as cheap imports. Do us all a favor--find a corner of a parking lot where you aren't likely to catch anything on fire and play with a pack of matches.

Ask at your local drug store. It depends on what you want it for but I think you can get small amounts there. We used it in high school to make invisible ink. Since it's used in fertilizer you might be able to buy it where they sell farm supplies too.

You should save yourself some money by opening your front door and stepping out so homeland security doesn't bust it down.

By the way, get on the phone and say bomb, Allah, jihad, and Bush.
