No male goats! They're not fit to live!
But castrated males---when they're fixed early---and females can be just like dogs. They're fantastic.
All the goats I owned had been bottle-fed, and they all loved to interact with humans. They were a smallish dairy breed, still pretty big, but they had good manners and could be handled with a collar. All of them had been dehorned as kids. We never had less than two at a time; goats without a herd get crazy-suicidal.
They were smart, maybe more so than dogs. That made them escape artists, but they were also so trainable and clever.
I would definitely have a goats again, especially if I moved somewhere with a scrub brush problem, where the goats could keep the lower forest layer bare.

Obviously some of the respondants have had bad experiences with goats. I been raising goats for many years now, for breeding & for pets.
A couple things to think about when considering a goat as a pet. First goats are social animals, if you don't have a companion animal (ie horse, pony, sheep, ect) you will need to get 2 goats, if you don't the one goat will get very lonley and this can lead to improper behavior (jumping, butting, or depression among others).
Intact male goats are not not appropriate for pets, any farmer who tells you otherwise is trying to unload one of their unwanted "manure factories" on you. Males that are intact almost always are looking to breed, when they get horny they emit a foul musky smell that gets on everything, they'll try to mount anything that moves, & generally have a very agressive disposition. The best goats for pets a wethers, neutered males, they don't go into rut and are typically gentle & loving (not to mention generally less expensive than intact males or females).
Finally, think about why you want a goat as a pet. If you're looking for a four legged lawn mower think again, goats are browsers, they look to pull leaves off of small trees & bushes, they don't graze grasses (though they love to eat poison ivy!). They are livestock, and need to be treated as such. A small wind tight barn and exercise area with high fences are a must.
A good source of information for people considering raising goats or new goat owners is Fiasco Farms website.
I hope this helps.

I have had two. And will never have another. I had each at separate times. The first was full sized, dehorned, and fixed, and still the most obnoxious and disgusting animal ever. He stayed in our horse barn, but he was always going into the office and crapping eveywhere, or chewing on anything that he could reach. He would also butt anything that he could, including humans and horses. The last one I had was for 6 months up until about 3 weeks ago. He was an intact medium sized with horns. And let me tell you he knew he was intact. He was a companion animal for our miniature horse, but he would constantly molest the mini. He would bite the mini and pull his tail out, and did not care how hard the mini fought back. He was the same way with humans. He would bite and butt you the instant you turned your back. I have no experience with female goats, but based on my experience with the males I would never have another goat again. Except in the form of BBQ, very tasty!

I use to breed and show Nubians and Toggenburgs. Great pets.
I've had both bucks and does...I really liked the Nubian bucks I use to have, but I wouldn't suggest a buck if you just want a pet...doe or a wether (castrated buck) would be good.
