Please note that the term "assault weapon" is a fiction. All it means is that a gun has more than some minimum number of "military-style features".
Those features are things like a folding stock, a pistol grip, plastic stock, a clip holding more than some number of rounds (10? 12? I forget), a bayonet mount, and other stuff like that. You could never get a machine gun before then - "assault weapons" was all cosmetic stuff.
You could still get an AK-47, but it had to have a few less "assault" cosmetic items.

Yes. The United States Constitution protects your right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment. There are court cases to substantiate this argument where judges and juries upheld the United States Constitution. I have a business card that has these court cases listed on it in case someone challenge my right to keep and bear arms.
You can own any weapon you can afford and carry it anywhere you go. Keep and bear.
Does this mean someone won't try to harass you on the issue? Hardly. There are all kinds of whackos out there who only want you to be subserviant to government and pay more in taxes.
You're rights are only guaranteed by your willingness and ability to stand up for yourself. Otherwise you have no rights. Only on paper.
I can show you how to own any weapon you choose and carry it anywhere you go. In fact, I can show you how to carry an automatic weapon aboard an airplane legally. Most people know very little about the law because it's not a law that those that know about it want you to know about. The media only covers stories they want you to hear.
If you would like more information the door is open.

If you are talking about military-style, centerfire rifles, they are indeed legal once again. Approximately a year or so ago, the Clinton gun ban was lifted and semi-automatic rifles with military characteristics were once again legal.
With the new Democrat led Congess, those weapons and accessories could be affected again. So you might want to write to your representatives and express your views on private ownership on such weapons.
If you are 21, and in a state where you can legally purchase a semi-automatic, military style weapon, and you have the money to do so........ buy now, while you still can!

Fully automatic anything is illegal. There are assault weapons that are legal but the Government has a list -- if it's on the list it is banned. Most Gun Shops can tell you what is legal and what's not.

It varies by state.
Some states have oppressed their citizens so if you live there, no, you can't own an assault-rifle.
Move to a state that allows you to excercise your rights, or else vote out the bums who are oppressing you.

Just what we need, another person who can't even spell will own a gun...I wonder if that speaks upon your insight and intelligence.
By the way, the gun you buy will more likely kill you or someone you love than any perpetrator. Something to think about.
