I went through the same thing 3 times.
Here's what to do:
* Ideally, you would get a pill from your doctor to dry up the milk.
* In the meantime, chill some cabbage leaves in the freezer, then put them in your bra. They stink holy-moly, but it works.
* Wear a very tight bra. This helps reduce milk production.
* Do NOT express milk, because this will make you produce even more.

Please ignore jerks like Captain M (above). It is the woman's choice what to do with HER OWN breasts.

There is a lot of breastfeeding propaganda out there. I have several friends who breastfed and loved it. Wonderful for THEM. Their kids are NOT ONE BIT smarter than mine, their kids are in the hospital FAR more often than mine, and their kids have a variety of maladies such as asthma, behavioral problems, obesity, etc.

I have also heard breastfeeders claim that they get more rest since they don't have to wash and sterilize bottles. BS! What type of "rest" is it when you have to feed your baby more often (every 2-3 hours) than a bottlefed baby who feeds every 3-4 hours?

Breastfeeding used to be about a woman's right to do what she wants with her own body, but it has become a new way of oppressing women. Forcing breastfeeding on a woman, telling her she is selfish, unnatural, and unmotherly if she does not breastfeed is a way of controlling women, their bodies, and their self-image.

If people tell you that the reason you should breastfeed is that it is natural and women have been doing it for 1,000s of years, you can answer them that women have also been dying in childbirth -- quite naturally! -- for 1000s of years. Does that mean it's desirable?

More power to you, for deciding what is right for you, your body, and your baby!!!!!!!

I just had a baby 7 weeks ago so I know what you are going through. First you need to buy a cabbage and chill it in the fridge. Next peel off two leaves once it is cold and cup your breasts with them. Then put on a tight sports bra and wrap your breasts with an ace bandage as tight as you can stand. Then take some ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. Repeat every few hours once the cabbage gets warm and wilted. This is what I did and it works- It will take about two weeks until your milk goes away...P.S.--->when you get in the shower..turn your breasts away from the hot water..this will stop more milk from coming in..ALSO whatever you do..DO NOT pump or express milk because this will only make it worse.. I know it hurts and sucks.but trust me it will go away.. the first few days are the worst. GOOD LUCK

Mother of 3 FORMULA FED CHILDREN (oh no, shoot me now all you Breastfeeding advocates!!) Anyhow, I went through the same pain as you are going through right now. I have also heard the cabbage leaves work, I myself have never tried it. I would advise you to keep a really tight bra on 24/7 for the next few days, even while bathing, just try to not get it very wet. Try nursing pads to catch the leaks but when changing them do it super quick. DO NOT try to express any of your milk or they will never get "back to normal" (not like they ever will) Massage will only stimulate milk production so avoid that as well. Advil for pain. They WILL feel better soon, rest assured, but it may take up to a week. Good luck and congratulations!!

HI Congrats on the lil one. My baby is almost one now but i still remember what your going through. What help me some times is a hot shower and just let the down flow effect take place i would leak some out in the shower and it would help. Also try using a breast pump. When you feel them hurt just pump you can put the milk in the fridge and save it for 24 hours or you can freeze it and save it much longer. I hope i was so help and i hope you and you baby have a wonderful life together.

You can take motrin or some kind of pain reliever, I've heard putting cold cabbage leaves helps alot, but most importantly keep them very well supported. Do not express any milk in any way because if you do and are not breastfeeding it will just make the pain last longer. When you take showers try to keep them short and not to hot and put a tight fitting bra or sports bra as soon as you get out.

I so know where you are at! My baby couldn't get a good latch and I was completely engorged to the point of being rock rock hard! What worked for me was lots of warm compresses with very hot towels (keep reapplying hot towels- as hot as you can stand), warm showers, massaging the breasts in small gentle circles along the ducts and then in downward motions toward the nipple. If you are not breastfeeding you may also need to remove some of the milk to relieve the pressure with a breast pump. I would also recommend taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen every 4-6 hours.

I swear by cabbage leaves and hat showers. Its all part of the joy of being a woman. It'll get better. I've got 3 kids, i breast feed but still become engorged occasionally. Keep a watch out for mastitis

I have always heard that breast feeding is best, but if you have decided that you are not going down that road, putting cabbage leaves inside your bra is supposed to help. My wife tried it with our first child and said it helped. She gave up and breast feed the other two. It is healthier for the baby and cheaper than the other alternative.

Ok, I'm not going to jump on you about breastfeeding. If you've decided adamantly NOT to breastfeed, DON'T pump or do anything that takes the milk out of your breasts. Breastmilk is a supply and demand thing. If the milk is leaving your body, it thinks it needs to make more.
Just take tylenol or something and use warm compresses.
And before anyone jumps on me about breastfeeding, I delivered an 8 lb 14 oz boy and breastfed him for a year.
It's a personal and choice.
Natural childbirth is better for mom and baby both too, but how many women who breastfeed were screaming for an epidural when they were in labor? (off my soapbox now)
Good luck.
P.S. The drug that they used to give women to "dry up" their milk didn't really work. It'll go away on it's own.

Why don't you feed your baby? Don't you know that breastfeed is the best milk for baby? And it has got lots of nutrient money can't buy?? I think it is a waste not to breastfeeding.. Me been breasfeeding my baby girl for the past 15 months til now. To be frank, breastfeed can prevent your baby from falling sick easily. THerefore til now my baby girl just sick for 1 time.
