A situation comedy is just that: a comedic televison show based on a certain situation!
For instance:
Situation 1) 6 friends in their 20's gather at a coffee shop daily to discuss their lives
Situation 2) 7 strangers get shipwrecked on an island
Situation 3) A widow with 3 children marries a widower with 3 children and must somehow form a family.
Get it now, why these are situation comedies?

Several people have given good answers, but so far I have not seen anyone say that Sit Coms (Situation Comedies) ARE a category of Comedy. Popularly meaning that they aim funny (people have different opinions about what is funny - there is a literary definition of comedy that has nothing to do with humor, but I am not going there).
It is the running "Situation" between shows that makes one a category of the other.

It means the comedy comes from the situation (either location or social set-up) that the people are in. Like "The Office" is a sit-com because it takes place in an office (the situation).

There are many different kinds of comedy entertainment, such as variety, ensemble, or stand-up. A situation comedy is formed around a specific set of circumstances with a specific group of people. The main characters remain the same.
So, Saturday Night Live and Comedy Club are comedies; Everybody Loves Raymond is a Situation Comedy.

A sitcom tells a story. A comedy show could be stand up, variety, etc.
So a sitcom could be considered a comedy show, but a comedy show is not necessarily a sitcom.

Friends is a sticom, in that a "situation" has been set up and we look in on their lives.
"comedy" refers more to live-action shows like "Saturday Night Live" or "MADTV"
