It looks like a wasp only it's a lot bigger it is black and has a huge stinger. It does not die when it stings you.

Well, honey bees and other members of that select family are the only hymenoptera which die after stinging. All other groups including the wasps, and hornets do not die after stinging. Many wasps and hornets get to an impressive size, many are over the 1.5inch mark!!! that's impressive. Actually a very common colour in the wasps is black, simply because this colour allows them to heat up faster, which allows for more efficient muscle movements and also kills off viral infections.....so to answer your question, it could be many things.....

Check out this website and try to match up an image with the wasp/hornet you saw.

It's probably a hornet which belongs to the same family as the wasp.

Could be a Cicada killer wasp, as they are large, especially the female. Google it to check.
