The type of lipstick you use depends on your individual taste. There are matte lipsticks that are drier and thus longer lasting. There are cream lipsticks that give good coverage and contain moisturizers. There are hydrating lipsticks that are good for dry lips. There are sheer lipsticks that are moist and give your lips a stain. There are also lipglosses that are fluid and have the most moisture.

Whether or not to apply lipstick, as with any aspect of applying makeup, is a personal decision. If you like it, wear it. Yet there are still some basic guidelines you can consider so you look better and your lips feel better about the choices you make.

When it comes to lipstick, there are vast differences in texture, coverage, durability, and sun protection (something we don't usually think about for our lips, but that is still very important). As you probably already know from experience, all these factors can vary from lipstick to lipstick even within the same cosmetics line.

What often frustrates women about buying lipsticks is that the claims about how they really perform are often inaccurate. We've all purchased lipsticks that promise to last all day but in actuality they don't make it past your morning commute. We've also purchased lipsticks that easily bleed into lines around the mouth, or that claimed they would make lips look plumper but end up irritating the lips or doing nothing at all. Even more typical are the lipsticks described as creamy that end up being nothing more than lip gloss. None of that is fun for your lips.

As a matter of practicality and longevity, I generally recommend choosing lipsticks that have a creamy rather than glossy finish, and that apply in an even, smooth layer that doesn't smear or look thick or greasy. When lipsticks go on too glossy or slippery they simply won't last very long. Reapplying lipstick on the hour is not a good form of exercise!

Of course, as I mentioned, whether or not to go with a matte or creamy finish is your own personal preference. True matte lipsticks do last noticeably longer than creamy (and especially sheer) lipsticks and matte lipsticks are least likely to bleed into lines around the mouth.

Also keep in mind that combining different textures and shades of lipstick is a great way to create your own signature color and style. You can first apply a matte lipstick and follow with a sheer lipstick, or apply lip gloss over it. In general, it is best to avoid wearing overly shiny (looking as if your lips are constantly wet) or glittery lipsticks during the day, especially if you are thinking an "Apprentice" career is something you are hoping for in life. Glaring wet shine or metallic glitter is best reserved for evening, not for daytime.

Attempting to get lipstick to stay on all day has its limitations. In terms of longevity and the convenience of not having to reapply lipstick as often, a matte or long-wearing formula (such as Max Factor Lipfinity, Cover Girl Outlast or my new Paula's Choice Constant Color Lip Paint) can be a major asset.

When it comes to sun protection, ignoring the lips is not healthy. Not only is the skin on the lips very thin, it does not contain any melanin—essentially, it is missing what other skin has: built-in (though limited) defense against UV radiation. Although conventional, truly opaque lipsticks can provide a barrier (which is one of the reasons some researchers think skin cancer on the lips is markedly higher in men than in women), for true sun protection, a lip balm with sunscreen applied underneath lipstick, or a lipstick with built-in sunscreen is a must.

i have dry skin, dry hair, dry lips, so i use moisturizing products usually. neutrogena moistureshine glosses have good pigment in a moisturizing gloss, but the color selection is kind of limited. covergirl triple lipstick is pretty much the only real lipstick i use. its moisturizing and has spf, and doesn't slide off when i apply it over my lip balm. revlon super lustrous is also good over lipbalm, but dries out my lips a little, and doesn't have spf.
