As a former Still Rings champion and coach , I never was able to master a split, the furthest I could go was about 3/4 of the way.

--When you start out , it might be better to try a front split, that is with your body facing one of your legs and the other behind you. Ease into a comfortable position where while you our stretched out you do not feel much pain. Stay there for about 30 seconds , then switch legs.
--Do each side for about 6 min. and see how your legs feel. Doing several 6 min reps a day , you can decrease your height from the floor gradually. Do not bounce in your split. Hold your weight off the floor with your arms if you are strong enough or hold onto someone.

--I've listed a few sites with pictures. Have fun!

In gymnastics you call the one good leg and the not good leg, means you split with one of the legs in front and you split better with one of them.
You have first, to warm up, your feet together in front and bench the knees to the side, make down and up the knees like buttterflies, for 2 or 3 minutes, then try to split for 1 minute each leg, 10 times. Even you can split perfectly if you try everyday, you will get a perfect split someday.

well... it depends what splits you wan to do. switch splits just hold them for 2 minutes a day and you should get them soon or a month. i guess it could be the same for the middle splits. trust me i am a cheerleader
