I'm getting ready to declare bankruptcy and need copies of my tax returns from 2002 to present. I never filed with a tax company so I don't have immediate copies available. I lost all tax forms in a fire. How do I go about getting copies of my tax returns and W-2's. I've also been told that I didn't file my state taxes for 2 years 2003-2004 once I get copies of my W-2's what is the best way to go about correcting this and getting filed. I know I will end up paying penalties and thankfully didn't owe that much back then. I didn't file the one year due to the fire. The second we are still trying to figure out. I live in Missouri if that helps out. This is all I need to officially file my bankruptcy so want it done fast.

You can get copies of your Federal returns from the IRS. If an extract will do, there is no cost. They take about 10 days to process.

If you need copies of the actual returns (which includes the W2s) filed there is a charge of $39.00 per return. These take about 6 weeks to process.

You can get copies of the missing W2s from your employers if you don't want to wait on the IRS to file the missing state returns. You can get copies of the forms from the MO DOR website.

The bankruptcy attorney should be able to file the back taxes for you. If you did not file a federal tax return in the past I would urge you to have a lawyer call the irs for you and explain why you missed filing that year. If it's state taxes, just file the years you missed. Get the forms from the state and just file.
