and, as a bit of a follow up, Do you think people "take it easier" on a candidate that is better looking?

and do you think this could be part of "Obama's media charm"... a reason they seem to like him?

Way, way too much. I have often read that Nixon "won" the debates with JFK on the facts and policies discussed - hands down - but he came across somewhat like a stiff, pre-programmed zombie on the television.
Most people interviewed thought JFK did a much better job in the debates.
(Note: In this illustration, it was probably a good thing - but that will not always hold true.)

A goodly amount with the exception of Bush because it was rigged first time out! Gore was much more handsome and appealing and the voting polls had him as the winner as well. It is a ridiculous thing vanity, but that is why Roosevelt insisted on walking when he needed a wheel chair with his polio. He got votes for the fact that he was strong enough to endure, so he played the role right for the public to see he could persevere until he collapsed then he got the pity and of course his wife Eleanor was a great first Lady and she won over all during the hard times of the depression and the war! All and all people should vote on policy and not against a candidate but for the best one and certainly not for race creed and color either! and definately not a religion eh? This islamic thing is scary and is not acceptable to me. Too many hidden agendas and the color thing as well is bad too for they have private vendettas just like Bush and we don't need a person in the white house on a crusade for his/her people of a certain religion or race! And I don't care what happen eons ago we need to wake up to that and realize we are past that time and not let that element in again even if it means war!

to choose a politician by their looks and looks alone is not just stupid and shallow, it is evil and evil is best represented in the human situation in the form of unprovoked hatred against and coupled with an aggressive impulse to cause harm to another person or group. Such hatred can be aroused from within the individual or group through jealousy, wrong teachings or due to unexplained extra-personal forces.

Absolutely looks matter. In this day and age it is Style over Substance. Just think about who the successes are today in our pop culture. Think about all the pretty people we make stars out of. Any substance in any of them? No different in Politics.
