Solution left on the sides of the buret are not being added to the reaction, but it is the volume is missing from your reading in the buret. A buret is used to deliver solution in precisely-measured, variable volumes. If the buret is dirty, its precise markings will not be accurate because the dirty interior surface will not allow as much volume of liquid to be measured. A dirty buret will contain less liquid that its marking indicates.

A "dirty" buret means the buret has a contaminate in the buret. Eg the last substance in the buret was 5M H2SO4 and you put in 0.1M NaOH. With this mix you could have a solution of NaOH at 0.09M greatly alturing your answer for the first trial. You may need to add more NaOH now making the solution closer to the 0.1M the bottle states (say 0.98M) and now you get a different answer. Third trial is done after refilling the buret and different answer. You get three measurements with a large spreed meaning low precision.

think about it...the purpose of a buret is to provide precise measurement during a titration...if it is not clean (dust/ dirt) or contains other chemicals it could affect the reaction time/ or color change and therefore lead to an unlikely result...so it's best to ALWAYS clean ur buret.

It has to do with the meniscus, the curve of the liquid adhering to the walls of the buret. You always measure to the bottom of the meniscus, but if it isn't consistent because the inside walls aren't clean, then you aren't going to get measurements that are as precise or repeatable.

duh, because the dirt and scum inside will add weight and may react with the chemicals that you're mixing.
