1600x1200 generally have poorer contrast ratio and response times than the 1680x1050, for the same price range.

1600x1200 (has more vertical screen) and 1680x1050 (better for movies). The resolution has nothing to do with contrast ratio and response times. Those are the monitor capabilities. First make sure you video card supports a resolution higher than 1280x1024. Hope this atleast gets you on the right tract.
