Ann Wilson (Heart)- power, range
Sara Lov (Devics)- emotional, power and sometimes sexy
Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs, Solo)- emotional
Janis Joplin- power, range
Terri Nunn (Berlin)- sexy, power
Toni Halliday (Curve) sexy, power
Kathy Fisher (Fisher)- emotional, power
Christina Aguilera- power, range
Kelly Clarkson- power, range

power= can be loud and not break, can hold a note for a lengthy period.

Emotional= The singer can put the sad in a sad song, or the desire in a love song. It's acting through tone. I'm comparing the emotionalist Christina Aguilera's Hurt vs Mary by Fisher and Devic's Firehead.

Range= can hit most if not all the notes

Sexy=a luring siren

I'll give you a few examples from different genres of music.
Jazz/Swing: Ella Fitzgerald is a great example of a remarkable female soloist. She is THE inspiration for most modern female singers and her voice is so distinct and sweet.
Rock: For a different flavor, you can also check out Ann Wilson from the band Heart. She has an incredible, powerful voice.
Opera: Also, Audra Mcdonald is a fantastic and dynamic singer. You can find her on recordings for the musical "Carousel" and in the movie/musical "Annie" (the most recent version).

Not well known, but with a mellow, haunting voice is Lizz Wright. Listen to her "Dreaming Wide Awake" and I think you will agree that she draws you into the music and makes you feel it. You don't want to turn her off -- and that is what makes her a remarkable female vocalist.

Well, it's a band, but Amy Lee (the singer) is incredible: Evanescence.

Also, I seem to have a slight obsession with Lady Sovereign, LOL

Janis Joplin, Lucinda Williams, and Billie Holiday come to mind. They have very different sounds but are all three great (or, were great).
