I had my name legally changed. One can do it through a lawyer, or one can go to one's local county office. I went to a lawyer and he gave me the forms, then I had to type in a petition and then publish an ad in the county paper and then brought the proof of publishing to the county judge, he signed the papers and bingo it was changed. I then went to my local SSA office and changed my SS card. The whole thing took me some 40 days.

I would call/ stop by at your local county office and see if they have the forms and go from there. You can contact some paralegals or attorneys in your area, as well- they will make it faster.

There are some restrictions on what you may choose as your new name. Generally, the limits are as follows:

You cannot choose a name with fraudulent intent -- meaning you intend to do something illegal. For example, you cannot legally change your name to avoid paying debts, keep from getting sued or get away with a crime.
You cannot interfere with the rights of others, which generally means choosing the name of a famous person with the intent to mislead. For example, most judges will not approve your renaming yourself George Bush or William (Bill) Clinton unless you have a convincing reason not related to the famous politicians.
You cannot use a name that would be intentionally confusing. This might be a number or punctuation -- for example, "10," "III," or "?."
You cannot choose a name that is a racial slur.
You cannot choose a name that could be considered a "fighting word," which includes threatening or obscene words, or words likely to incite violence.

Take all legal documents, birth certificate, etc.. and go to your local court house with a document that tells what your name is and what you want it change to and file it. Depends on the state your in and what your reason is to change your name and if you have children with your name, the Judge may or may not let you change your name. Plus if you have a criminal history they want normally let you change it. If kit's a marriage or something simple they usually don't have problem with it. Also check your local Library reference books on the proper document that you can do yourself I did it and it was free.

you have to fill out some documents and file them with the court. they give you a court date and you show up and the judge will usually just sign the papers. there are a lot of "paralegal" service companies that will help you do all the paperwork, or you can go to an online site like legalzoom as as an alternative to hiring an attorney. an attorney will cost you about $1000 to do it for you.
