My wife and I cannot afford the San Francisco area but love the lifestyle. Where in the US has a comparable climate, demographics and job opportunities with a lower cost of living?

I know what you mean. I have been all over the US, but I have not found any other place that combines everything that makes up SF.

You will most likely have to compromise on some of the things you want. Seattle is a lot like SF and a bit more affordable, but you don't have the same climate. It has lot more rain and rains year round, but usually not days on end non-stop like it does in during the rainy season here. My brother lives in a northern suburb of Seattle and loves it there, says he will not live anywhere else.

South east US is generally the most affordable. Atlanta, Georgia is probably the most cosmopolitan SE city with many different cultures and higher tolerance for the different cultures.

Anyway that is a couple of suggestion you may find worthwhile to look into. Good Luck.

Las Vegas! My husband and I just move here from Miami. The living coat is a lot lower than San Francisco for sure, housing are very affordable, there's a lot of city life near the strip and more relax environment outside the strip. We have great restaurant here, all the entertainment and show. Way less traffic. Plus the city is grow so much there's many job opportunities. A lot of people move here and start their own business. And you are still close enough to CA to visit friend and family. We drive to LA a lot to visit my husband's family. Airfare to San Francisco is like 89 for round trip last time for us.

you might want to check our asheville nc. it has a few differences in climate, but is protected from most of the severe weather by the smoky mountains, and is absolutely beautiful and the cost of living is half or less of san francisco. it's a thriving little city and you should be able to locate good jobs and a wonderful place to live. good luck
