Faith is an asset, religion is a liability, in my opinion.
Faith is an asset because it reminds us that our perception of the world should be bigger than ourselves. It reminds us that we are all the same, and that everything deserves respect. Faith helps people to have compassion and be unjudgemental; which the world could do with more of.
Religion is a liability because it preaches faith yet, it doesn't practice what it preaches. How many wars have been fought because each religion thinks theirs is the only religion? Is that showing compassion, respect, and no judgements? Is that showing respect for everyone? No, it appears that religion wants people to respect those in that religion. Has anyone ever stopped and realised that all religions have very similar beliefs? The core elements to each religion are very similar, it is how the beliefs are showed that differs.

It doesn't matter. If people decided not to beleive in religion, they would get in an arguement over something equally as retarded (aka, facetious, pointless, irrelevent, etc, etc). Its the same thing with politics and everything else.
If atheism (which is equally as strange) was made the world wide religion, then the arguement would be over pedantics. People are irrational, and equally dicks to everybody that doesn't think like them, this is a liability, and your never going to change that, unless some miraculous discovery such as neural learning or sharing of thoughts or great enlightment or understanding, emotional hardwiring--the likes--were to happen..which is most probably not going to happen for another 200 years or never.
So really its kind of pointless to argue over the matter of religion. Because it isn't religion. Its people. Religion is just an expression of spiritual need.
In this respect, its an asset for what religion satisfies, and its a liability for clear reasons. It would be a liability anyway if religion didn't exist however, because humans would mathematically transfer their irationality to some other beleif, activity.

The separation of Church and State has been the subject of controversy and debate for centuries. There is such a fine line when we try to define this. Yes, Religion in the Christan practice, is with out a doubt an asset. There is nothing wrong with The 10 Commandments & knowledge of the 7 Deadly sins to help form a moral statis in society. But, of coarse, if you are makeing a reference to the fighting in the Middle-East. There is a problem, and we all need to try and understand just what "liability" causes hatred. This is such a difficult subject phylisophically speaking,so I hope someone can enlighten us with a solid answer.

since mankind is an integral part of nature - in Nature liabilities & assets are the two sides of the same coin. As nothing is wholly negative or wholly positive, so also nothing is only a liability or only an asset. Religion like everything else, is both; liability and asset.

It is a vital asset to humans when rendered appropriate with their world and surroundings, but if it is an obsolete mythology created thousands of years ago that does not match people's understanding of the natural world today, and if it is being taken literally and not symbolically, then it can become a HUGE liability to society, and international relations. There are all too many examples for you to choose from in the modern world.

Religion is neither an asset nor a liability;
When religion is misused for making money, it becomes useless;
The community of husband and wife can be extended to a family, group of relatives, group of like minded friends, group of people living in a place etc
Similarly, relgion is a large group of people, having relatively common belief system;
Mankind can live with or without larger groups;
But smaller group living is essential to happy living.

Religion is an induction of few ethics on ourselves. It's a kind of knowledge. And knowledge my friend is never a liability. Although it's extremely vulnerable. It's upto the mankind as howe to use it.
Sadly, the knowledge is used as antoher factor of discrimination. Most of the religious claims that you can hear today would be about criticism of other religions, beliieveng in jsut the being they term as God and plenty of such things.
Study any religious book you awant, you may find relations or terms of other religions mentioned in it but never criticism for other religion. It's we, the human beings who have levied this discrimination. We always want terms to discriminate ourselves and prove that we are the best. And we can find any reason to do that. We discriminate ourselves on basis of colour, region, religion, cast, belief, individuality, etc. Later we blame racism, castism, religion, etc. as the culprits.

Here's how I look at it.
Every religion, denomination, philosophy or service group has to have it's own little clubhouse; hence you have Protestant churches, Catholic churches, Jewish temples, Elks Clubs, Masonic Halls, etc.
This is where the members go on a regular basis to attend structured "services" whereby they can get a dose of spirituality or philosophy - much like a drive-thru window - and share a sense of community with other similar believers and feel good about themselves and their belief system.
In the sense that most religions preach love for others, sympathy, benevolence, etc., they are a positive influence on society.
To the degree that they display intolerance of other belief systems, they are a liability.
