The word 'circumcision' usually relates to a surgical procedure done on males. The foreskin of the penis is cut off and discarded. Historically it was done for religious reasons (particularly among the Jewish faith) but nowadays the reason of hygeine is used a lot. That reason is frequently debated.
Unfortunately, a type of 'circumcision' has been practiced in some third-world countries on the visible sexual organs of women and young girls. In the western world female circumcision is often considered to be mutilation. Anecdotely, female circumcision can leave long term problems including a decrease in pleasure and an increase in pain during sex.

It is a mutilation of the genitals.

This practice was started by primitive desert tribes; some mutilate boys and girls some just mutilate girls and others, including the US, just mutilate boys.

The most common circumcision is male genital mutilation, the foreskin which contains more than half of the sensory nerves of the penis is cut away leaving the glans (tip of the penis) exposed to dry out, desensitize and turn to callus. Friction against clothing will leave the glans nearly numb and insensitive for intercourse.

During a circumcision, the prepuce or the foreskin, which is the skin that covers the tip of the penis, is removed. Circumcision is usually performed on the first or second day after birth. It becomes more complicated and riskier in infants older than 2 months and in boys and men. The procedure takes only about 5 to 10 minutes. A local anesthetic (numbing medicine) can be given to your baby to lessen the pain from the procedure.

Circumcision of the women's clitoris is widely practised to this day in a lot of Muslim country's albeit sometimes very brutal. But it's a practise that should be outlawed as well as male circumcision. All the religious bigots that believe such a practise must exist need re-educating.All that have the misconception that male circumcision is all about hygiene issues,I could say the same thing about a women's clitoris.Makes no sense does it.Closed mind zealots need to broaden their mind a little and do a little research of their own and stop reading and listening to garbage.Just because it is such a widely practised procedure does not make it right! The butchering and mutilation of our children must STOP.

for males it is the removal of the skin covering the head of the penis, and in my opinion it is being done for no good reason now, parents just don't want to take the time and clean their baby boys penis properly.

For females I believe it is the removal of the clitoris, a barbaric and occasionally fatal procedure mostly preformed in African countries.
