What is the biggest and / or meanest fish species I can keep in a 55 gal tank? I have ph 6.7 and a good ammount of plants. I have a green terror in it that I will be selling since he'll be getting too big for the tank. I'm not going to be upgrading tanks, so it needs to be a fish who will fit at adult size. I've been examining the dwarf cichlids the past week, and I'm interested at examining the other side of the scale.

Something other than an oscar or convict please... I have a 36 gal convict tank.

Oscars grow to 15 inches... Its not responsable to keep them in a tank only 13 inches wide. Otherwise I'd get a flower horn, which is about the same size and a lot meaner than an oscar.

A pumpkinseed sunfish is the meanest fish you could get for that tank. They are twice the terrorizing attitude of an aggressive oscar. They only get about 7".

Hmmm, how about a betta? LOL Just kidding :)

Oscars and parrots aren't mean, just misunderstood. I've had both live together as well as with other fish quite cozily. Unfortunately, most of the truly large meaner cichlids get too big for that size, like a managuense. Piranhas would be a pain with having to feed them live fish all the time, unless you can train them to eat fillets instead. Plus, they're illegal in a lot of states. Here's a link with some cichlids on it. A red devil or salvini might work out well.

How about a puffer? Here's a great site about them, and quite a bit on the freshwater side, so you don't have to mess with brackish!

I can say that the Oscars can extremely mean, and are OK in a 55 tank. but if you are looking for a more interesting fish i would say convict cichlids. they breed easily, have long life, more active than Oscars and the are cheap. They are mean too, mine killed an Oscar that was three times his size. the only bad thing is that they may eat you plant if they are live.

Any of your three fish will be fine in your tank. That's assuming you keep them alone. One jack, one oscar, or one pleco (the pleco will need a 100+ gallon tank eventually). Filters aren't cheap. For the fish you want, you should have double filtration, so get a filter meant for a 100 gallon tank. Buy new equipment, then you'll have the packaging and, thus, the warranty.

Snake Head man! By fare one of the meanest fish around! Watch your fingers, they have teeth! Snake Heads are a primitive fish that can breath out of water for long periods of time and have been known to jump out of tanks often so a good strong lid is needed to prevent this. This is a very strong and aggressive fish, others may be pushed around or eaten, plants may be disturbed often and may not be a good idea.Good luck in your search!

GT is a fine fish, why do u want to get departed from it? Its just appropriate for that tank. If u want to remove it then dont go for piranhas or flowerhorns, they grow muh larger than green terror. Dwarfs are good choice, u can have a lot of them there. You can try African cichlids too, dont bother about salt they'll be just fine in freshwater. If you want more fishes to choose from you can just go and check this link out:

You could do what I did with my 52 gallon - Put about 10-12 Demasoni ( Malawi Cichlids) with some Yellow labs to contrast colors. The Demasoni are extremely aggressive towards their own species, therefore you will witness alot of role playing, dominant males, etc. They are beautiful fish to watch, and there will be some scraps and lip locking to be viewed for sure! good luck!

How about a kenya cichlid, black convict cichlid, managuense cichlid, salvini cichlid, gold head compressicep cichlid. etc. Actually, cichlids are about the only "mean" "big" freshwater fish that could fit that size tank.

The Firemouth cichlid is pretty sweet. I don't know that I would call it either super aggressive or really big....but it does look pretty menacing when it flairs it's gill's and show's it's eye-spots!!
