set it free and then if you really want one as a pet, plan ahead, set up the equipment, read more about them and then buy one from a reputable pet shop

Having lizards doesn't neccessarily equate to being able to keep an amphibian, I'm great with lizards and snakes and turtles, but it comes down to high humidity animals and for some reason I just can't do it, I've given up, if it doesn't have fur or scales, it's not for me.
I suggest you find a field guide to your local amphibians so that you can identify -for yourself- what kind of newt/salamander/whatever it really is. From there, I'm sure you can find a book on the care and maintenance at least of newts in general. I'm assuming crickets, earthworms, bloodworms and the like would be good for it, but I'm not sure about calcium/D3 supplements or UV or full-spectrum lights.
Get a book, it'll be better for the little guy than just listening to what complete strangers with who knows how much or little experience.

Put it back, you don't know what it eats, how to care for it or what species it is. You shouldn't take animals for the wild. If you refuse to let it go then look it up on the internet but I would say get some crickets or maybe really small feeder fish.

Let it go. If you want a lizard, adopt or buy one bred in captivity.

it's a wild animal. take it to the nearest pond & let it go. that's the kindest thing you can do. well done for giving it time & consideration, though :)
