Cool! I use to live in San Jose then moved down to Gilroy for awhile. Even took a couple classes at Gavilan.
It's beautiful down there. I bet the hills are carpeted green right now!

What you are looking for are backpacking sites, and there are several around the Bay Area. I am currently planning a backpacking trip to Castle Rock State Park, which is near Los Gatos. Thing is, most of the backpacking sites in the Bay Area still have some amenities, like an outhouse, table, and piped water. And almost all of them ban campfires - the only one that doesn't it Castle Rock, and even then they only allow fires when it isn't fire season. I think the fire thing makes sense - unless you are in a survival situation, your desire for a fire on your terms doesn't justify the risk of a forest fire, and ground fires in any place you want ruin the soil. If you really, truly want to "rough it" you need to get onto some National Forest land or BLM land. Most of the parks in the Bay Area are run by local park districts, and are very popular, so of course the rules are going to be rather strict.
