Chew sugar free gum whenever you feel the need to smoke.
Suck on life savers or other hard candy
Take a walk
Find a support group
Call a friend on the phone when ever you feel the need to smoke.
And, my husband quit "cold turkey". The doctor told him he should not continue to smoke, and he came home, threw away all his smoking supplies, and has smoked since, and that was 8 years ago. So you can do it.
Good for you and good luck to you.

Well, first let me say, CONGRATULATIONS!
When I quit, it's now been 8 years ago, I used Nicorette gum. I didn't use it the way that it was suggested on the package because I really wanted to be stronger than that. I ended up using 2 packets out of the package before I threw that out. I guess I used it as a crutch for the first week. Then one morning I had this HUGE craving for a cigarette. I decided not to panic, and instead, I watched the thought as it came to me, crested, and then it went away. I was determined to watch that thought, so to speak. When I realized that it was only a "thought" that was causing this urge to smoke, I disconnected from the frantic need to grab a cigarette. I smoked for over 35 years and quit cold turkey.
There is more to this story. My mother who was 79 at the time, had emphysema. I had taken her to the doctor because she had an infection and she was having difficulty breathing. We got her some antibiotics and she also needed to get some groceries. I took her to the store and we were walking down an aisle. Behind me, I heard a woman telling her husband which cans of beans she wanted for dinner. She snapped at him, "No, not those, those." Out of the corner of my eye, I could see her point to the top shelf. I have to be honest, I thought, "What the heck is wrong with you not getting it for yourself!" I was rather perturbed. About that time, they came around in front of my mother and I, and the woman was dragging an oxygen tank behind her. I KNEW that this woman would be me in another few years. I went home that night, smoked the last cigarette in my pack, tore up the rest of the carton and never looked back. (My children noticed that night!) I also didn't tell my husband. Funny, he didn't notice for 3 1/2 days that I wasn't smoking anymore. It didn't really matter, though, because I did it for myself, not for him.

The last time I stopped smoking for 5 years it was the cold turkey way also....just one day threw my pack in the trash and kept busy then......it was in my mind to just stop....had a day or 2 of withdrawals but nothing drastic....just don't replace food in place of smoking. Felt a bit jittery day or two but as long as I kept busy I felt better....
I got mad one day at work and began again ....after 5 years off!!
Dread going thru that again, and like you it will be cold turkey for I have tried all the other mess out there....its just something has to be in my mind that its what I want to do

I don't know how old your are and how long and how much you have been smoking, but be careful. My neighbor who was about 60 gave up smoking cold turkey and he died a few days later. If you body has become accustom to ridding itself of the smoking toxins, a sudden withdrawal can be dangerous. You should consult a doctor, especially if you are older.

Hey i quit 3 days ago...my best advice is to get a buddy or someone to say "good job" keep you wanting too...TRUST ME....it's worth it...so stay!! but another thing, if your quitting for someone else...it's not going to work, but if your quitting for yourself all you have to do is take it one day at a time. I quit cold turkey. Also, don't trade smoking for another bad habbit...such as eating, or watching tv...i picked up crocheting and that really helped because i was using my hands. it would be good if you went for at least a walk around the block instead of smoking...say ok, instead of smoking i'm going for a walk...i love to walk...plus it's even better if you get a walking partner...so...all of this will help and it will be successfull, i believe in you!! hang in there!! keep in mind that every time you smoke a cigarette your taking 7 minutes off of your life!! but when you quit your body can heal itself...

I quit, cold turkey, many years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself, and I was a 2 pack a day smoker. Don't give in to friends who want to tease you, as they are being mean and not helpful. I have read that vitamin C and the B vitamin, Niacin can be helpful, so you may want to check on the amounts. I use as a daily supplement, 100mg of C and 100mg of Niacin twice a day. In the morning with breakfast, and in the evening with dinner. Can't hurt and might help. Keep in mind, it is a choice that you are making, for your long term well being. My brother died a horrible death from lung cancer. Best wishes.

I have found that chewing on a piece of gum or eating mints when I was craving a cigarette worked. I personally got to the point of disgust with my smoking and actually started to feel like I was going to puke after a few puffs. That did it for me! I couldn't touch a cigarette after knowing how gross it was and how bad my clothes, hair and breath smelled. Start psyching yourself out about how gross it is and you will eventually get grossed out and not be able to bring yourself to smoke again. Good luck. You can do it!!

My husband quit cold turkey about 7-8 years ago. He chewed gum, sucked on hard candy and suckers to keep his mouth occupied. He has not had a cigarette since he finished that last pack.
