This ain't a stupid question....Lol...

Ya, You should keep only one aniti-virus software for removing Viruses.
But Spywares are different case, you should install one very good Anti-spyware(Like spybot) for spyware. Becasue most of the anti-viruse software can't detect spywares.

Thanks.

Definitely not a stupid question.
For an anti-virus, no. More than one av running at the same time is a system lock-up waiting to happen. Esets Nod32 is all you need for your av. It's only about $40 U.S. and kicks Nortons tail.
For anti-spyware, it depends. You can have several like SaferNetworking's SpyBot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's AdAware with no problem. Any problems will arise if you have more than one that actively protects your comp. Spybot and AdAware are scan on demand only (for the free versions).
As a rule, if two or more programs that perform the same function are active at the same time the odds of a conflict skyrocket. AVG's antispyware (formerly Ewido) is an example of an active antispyware package along with spyware doctor and spysweeper.
Get a solid AV like Nod32 and get spybot and adaware. Install, update and do a full system scan at least weekly. Spybot and adaware are both free, so lock and load.
As an extra, if you don't have a firewall (XP's firewall doesn't really count) get one ASAP. Zonelabs offers a free version of ZoneAlarm though the Pro version is the best. Avoid their AV, it blows chunks.
Later tater, good luck, and I hope this helps.

This is not a stupid question.

You should never use more than one AntiVirus program. They will conflict with each other and not protect your computer. Only use one AV program.

AntiSpyware programs are different. You should have at least three of these that provide full time protection. There is a reason for this. About 2000 new spyware programs are introduced each month and no single program can keep up with all of them. By have three full time AS programs you increase your ability to avoid infections.

Do not assume that all free AS programs will provide full time protection. Only a few do this. Most free programs are "on demand" scanners only.

Windows Defender is free and a full time program. It get automatic updates through the Microsoft/Windows updates.

Spybot Search and Destroy is free and will provide full time protection as long as the Tea Timer function is activated. This can be activated during the download and set up. Watch for the window that offers this function and check the box to activate it.

SpywareBlaster is free and monitors and blocks programs from getting on your computer. It does not scan and remove.

The above programs are available at this download site:

1 of each and good ones such as Kaspersky anti-virus and CounterSpy work very well together and will not slow your system down.

Don't use 2 antivirus programs. They wil usually conflict with eachother. You can use as many anti-spam/spyware programs as you please
