Around ten years. Depends how old they were when the came into the league. I mean Carter and Garnett both came into the league from high school, so they probably could play for 15 years. But Kidd and Nash both did 4 years of college each so they could probably play 10-12 years in the league.

Depends on three things I'd say:

1. Their style of play.
2. When they come out of college.
3. Whether they can be lucky and avoid major injury.

Based on these three factors I'd say a player that plays a relatively low impact type of game (eg: not high flying acrobatic or crazy allen iverson esque drives), spends at most 2 years on college, and doesn't miss more than half a season due to injury, can play at least 10-11 seasons in the NBA. Naturally some players like Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant came out from high school so their season totals will be higher than your average player.

On a side note I remember looking at stats from some Hall of Famer NBA players that played in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Majority did not play more than 12 years. I would assume this is due to the fact that life in the NBA was much tougher back then with everything from traveling/hotel arrangements/practice facilities.

Star players will play about 12-16 years.
Guys like Jordan, Stockton, Miller, Malone, Robinson & Barkley played long time.
