sent to a hospital prison ward. I hate when they are sent to jail, to only have to be shipped back and forth from hospital to prison.
just leave them in the hospital

A line must be drawn.
if they are convicted then they need to serve their time.
If they haven't been sentenced then maybe. Definitley yes if they could afford the bail.
Though we don't want half the people diagnosed with a terminal illness running around robbing banks in the hopes their family will get the money if they don't get caught.
When diagnosed with a terminal illness those last days are the most precious in life. People want to make the most of them.
Some may thiunk a big score is the way to make the most and others want to be with family and friends.
I wish it were a more perfect world but unfortunately life just sucks sometimes and thats it.

If someone commits a crime that is minor, though an offense that could send that person to jail,it is at the judge's discretion to allow a different sentence for a terminally ill person.

No, they should have to take their punishment like anyone else.
Jail or prison is the harshest form of punishment our government gives out to criminals short of the death penalty. It is reserved for those who, in the court's or jury's view are a threat to society. Society deserves to be cleansed of that threat. Making exceptions only weakens the law and encourages evil-doers. Criminals have to KNOW punishment for their behavior will be swift and severe - no matter what.

Depends on the crime. If they are still a danger to the public then they should go to prison.

They should be sent to prison because they knew the possible penalty for the act when they committed it; their condition should earn them no special treatment.
