There are a lot of different ways that fish spawn. With live-bearing fish there are several different methods,in some the eggs merely develop inside the female, in others nutrition is passed from the female to the fry indirectly, in still others there is an organ that functions like an umbilical chord. Some egg-layers,like the African Cichlids in the Rift Lakes are mouth brooders, with the female laying several eggs at a time on a carefully cleaned area,to be fertilized by the male and then picked up and held in the female's mouth until they are as much as 3 or 4 weeks old. Fresh water Angelfish lay neat rows of adhesive eggs side by side, then both parent fish tend and clean the eggs til they hatch. Danios merely express the eggs and fertilize them in mid-water and swim away allowing the eggs to sink to the bottom. The male Stickleback builds a fairly elaborate tubular nest and tends the eggs til hatching. An Amazon species actually jumps out of the water to adhere the eggs to over-hanging leaves, where they are fertilized by the male.Betta's actually "embrace" curving their bodies so that the male appears to squeeze the eggs from the female while fertilizing them and then picking them up and placing them in the bubble nest. This barely scratches the surface of the many spawning schemes that fish employ. Hope you find this interesting,or informative.-------PeeTee
