A month ago i was studying with someone and another person came up to them and asked "why are you so smart?" and my friend replied "both my parents were very smart and i read a lot when i was younger" Does our intellegence come from parents? I'm a poet and my mother was a painter and my father was a detective, i'm curious if i get my street smarts and personality from my father and my book smarts and talent from my mom.

do you get what i'm asking?

Genetic materials comes from each parent. It also helps to have a nurturing environment where learning is encouraged.
Also a good diet during childhood helps with brain and
nerve development. Everything is important as it
forms the child's brain and behaviors towards learning.

Both of my parents were teachers and they also encouraged
me to read and be creative. I passed that on to my children
as well.

your personality and smartness comes from the evironment around you i.e. where you live, work, and the people you interact with. sure you get some of your personality and smartness traits from your parents but those genes just make what your brain can handle and interpret. sometimes your parents can carry a psychological disease like epilepsy. and your friends parents were nessesarily smart that way. they were smart enough to give her/him a book when she was younger. and your street smarts come from what you think of the world and how you interpret it. so basically, ever since you were born you've been a student to the world and how your interpret the world determines whether you can understand the world, and if you do, your considered a smart individual

It is not that simple, as the effects of the genes are probabilistic, polygenic for some traits ( many loci contribute to trait ) and pleiotropic. ( some single genes code for different proteins ) Then there is the environmental input; the genotype expressed into the phenotype. Personality and intelligence are heritable, though, so do not let anyone tell you differently.

PS Then throw normal recombination and crossing over into the mix.

well im like super smart cuz like my great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather ate apples.... NOT!! lol sorry ......... your smart because your parents pass on traits and they also train you when you are younger.. apparently reading to a child while theyre in the womb increases there potential intelligence but im still rather undecided about that.. basically hereditry and genetics determine everything, even your habits

It comes from God, your looks and things are passed down thru genes your parents pass on to you , but your basic personality is from God and it is molded thru life experience. at least that's what i believe.
