its probably an apparition is an anomalous, quasi-perceptual experience of something that is not really there.
n scientific or academic discussion it is to be preferred to the term ‘ghost’ in respect of the following points:
(1) The term ‘ghost’ carries with it a certain amount of question-begging baggage of a theoretical kind concerning the proper explanation of apparitional experiences. The particular explanation implied by the term ‘ghost’ is that some element of the human being survives death and, at least under certain circumstances, can make itself perceptible to living human beings; whereas there are other, competing explanations of apparitional experiences.and that can possibly be the reason
for the lights to be on and off and those bizarre things in his room,!

Well - ask him one thing just to be sure, When the lights go on and off - can you HEAR or SEE the light switch move? If not, then it may possibly be an electrical problem with the circuits? Just using logic first. These usually occur in old houses.
On the other hand, not meaning to alarm you or anything - it may be a type of ghost called a Poltergeist. They happen to be a noisy, and naughty "spirit" - which often like to pulls pranks on people. Now, from most Poltergeist activity videos I have seen - they like to cause a bit of trouble around the house, like moving objects around and making noises. Are there items that have gone missing in his house? Is he hearing any loud knocks from 'no where'? And have items been moved around (namely furniture)? If Yes, then chances are - you've got a Poltergeist on your hands.
I think it is possible for you to have a Poltergeist, but it's just as equally possible that it may be something extremely logical and simple. I hope you have checked the house to make sure.
As for the Figures - they can be 3 things:
* A Shadow Ghost/Spirit: These ghosts usually appear as a shadow of sorts.
* An Apparition: They show up in a transparent human form and wear the clothing of their period. You might also note that they normally appear faint and disfigured as in being incomplete.
* Or an Eye illusion - these are all too common, where you THINK you see something - but they turn out to be nothing significant.
One way to find out if there is a ghost in that house is to take a lot of photos. If you find anything odd on the photographs, like Orbs - you could consider yourself a good Ghost Hunter to call over.
Anyway, finally I'll suggest you have a look at this website: http://www.ghoststudy.com It'll guide you around, and tell you what to do if you DO have a ghost, and want to get rid of it. They have an email address on the website that you can use if you need more info/help.

Well.... Im just speculating but it could be possible for a light to turn on by accident. A light switch normally completes a circuit that allows an electric current to flow to a light bulb. If a wire or metal part of th switch were loose or broken in some way i guess it could be possible for it to turn on. Still that would probably be more like flickering and you say its not that. It also seems kinda uspicious that it turned off right when your boyfriend got into his house. Sounds more like a break-in to me. Whatever, im rambling. Hope it was of some use.

Is he watching too many horror movies? You may have a poltergiest on your hands. When a person is feeding off alot of negative energy ( such as depression), other entities - such as ghosts - etc. can get attached to this negative vibe and stick, thus doin wierd stuff. Poltergiests like playing with the living because they're just pissed off they're dead.
How about doing a room cleanse. Open all the windows whilst using a smudge stick to fill the room with smoke. Light up candles and chant words such as "Negative energies are not welcomed here" or some shite like that. Should do the trick.
If not, you may have been ubducted by aliens. It does happen!

Has he had any work done on his house recently? Possibly by friends?
This could be accomplished by using a remote switch - much like a garage door opener opens .. a garage.
Or, and this could be a very serious point, it could be rats or mice chewing on cables. The lights flickering on and off might be from vermin getting fried inbetween bites. Is there a smell? There might not be... but it might not hurt to have a professional check for infestation.
Now, if it is not friends playing a joke or fried mice then you might want to go to church the following Sunday and book a house visit with your pastor.

I think that You may be the attention of those folks at
http://www.smilenow.de/cgi-bin/weblog.php.cgi?weblog=8
They probably get a few laughs out of You guys trying to figure out what's going on. Typically the metal in the switch may have oxided causing electricity flow problems. Buy a new switch, that should solve the magic light show. As to the rest of the strange happenings, my opinion is that someone with this technology that could help us in many facets of life is being used to confuse and alarm You, and others. I have had these experiences and I have made it known to the workers of my local electric company. My additional questions to You is do you experience any day va vu?
Also see the question on telepathics.

I can think of three reasons, but there may be more reasons.
1. some wires are touching somewhere and causing short circuit and open circuit.
2. Maybe someone is playing tricks. Even if u feel, no one came in, u can't be sure.
3. Maybe some prankster is controlling the lights with some kind of remote, that he has made.

I once heard a tale about some wall lights that used to do that and when the homeowner finally got fed up and had an electrician look at them they weren't actually connected to anything. If you can believe that then I'm sure you're boyfriend's experience is much more feasible.

Without knowing more details, I would say
1. (For sceptics) Inspect the switch and replace it. They are not very expensive at all.
2. Research your address for any violence in the past.
3. Find your local paranormal org. and speak to them about it.
When we bought our house, I heard rapping down the hall, and at times felt a presence.
Once, I heard classical music coming through my heating ducts.
(I do not listen to classical) I heard it as I was falling asleep.
I went and talked to an Indian I know, and had his wife perform a ceremonial blessing.

Well...you didnt give neough info. If it was an old house, then it could be a spirit, but if it was recently built, then he could have done something bad, and someone from his past, or from his future is haunting him. I suggest you do it your self, or get an expert, and do a sayonce (spelt toally wrong but pronounced say-on-s) You just call apon the spirt with candels, and meditation.
