Poem:
My Dog Is a Plumber
My dog is a plumber, he must be a boy.
Although I must tell you his favorite toy
Is a little play stove with pans and with pots.
Which he really must like, 'cause he plays with it lots.
So perhaps he's a girl, which kind of makes sense,
Since he can't throw a ball and he can't climb a fence.
But neither can Dad, and i know he's a man,
And Mom is a woman, and she drives a van.
Maybe the problem is in trying to tell
Just what someone is by what he does well.

The poem " My Dog is a Plumber" by Dan Greenburg:
a - reflects a male dominated stereotype.
b - demonstrates the changing roles of men and women that was emerging in the 1970s and 1980s.
c - showes that despite the difference in the genders and the changes that were occurring, that there are still some of the traditioanl gender roles that make sense to the author.
d - showes that many people were opposed to the women's movement of the 1970s.
Plz help me OUT. Thank you!

B, the poem clearly steriotypical roles of the two genders:

Plays with pots and a toy stove characterises women who traditionally cooked meals.

The plumber is traditionally a man's job.

Men are supposed to be able to throw and climb, but the speaker's father cannot.

The speaker's mom drives, prior to the 70s, men were the only ones who drove.

This poem is obviously contrasting the traditional associations with men and women developed in the 50s with the changing lifestyles of the 70s and the 80s.

A is wrong because the poem clearly is not male dominated, as the speaker's mother is breaking steriotypes by driving and the father is depicted as weak.

C is wrong because the poem is entirely about the changes in gender roles NOT making sense to the speaker.

D is wrong because the poem clearly supports women's right's:
"Maybe the problem is in trying to tell
Just what someone is by what he does well."

The answer is B because, from the description, you can't really tell if the dog is a guy or a girl from just what he does, just like in the 70's and 80's and even today you can't tell the gender of a person by just their activities.

b. b/c the author is having trouble describing what gender the dog is through the different roles that are taken on.

You could choose any of the answers. Explain it and it would be correct. I think this is one of those things with no right or wrong answer.

it's a. because everything it says revolve on how a man should act and the things that are to be done by a woman are restricted on house keeping,cooking,etc.alone.
