It says "I bet you think this song is about you," and yet it is about that person...what don't I get?

The speculation is that Carly Simon (who also wrote the song) is singing about one of her exes--telling him "You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you," meaning Mick Jagger could think it's about him, Warren Beatty could think it's about him, James Taylor could think it's about him etc. She's never revealed which guy the song is about, but she's given clues over the years and Wikipedia has kept track of them. Humm I don't guess I get it either. I listened to it the other day and thought the exact same thing. I really think she had a problem figuring out what to sing about. She came up with "You're so Vain".. It's stupid, huh.

It's supposed to be ironic. And Carly never said a name in the song so who knows who it is really about?
