Lowest cost warmth---------------------------
Cayenne Pepper
In your socks and with an oil all over.
Sounds crazy but if I had to go some where real cold and could only take one thing to keep me warm, it would be cayenne pepper

Before coal stoves, they probably had wood-burning stoves. Solar energy can also be used to provide heat at no cost. Necessity is still the mother of invention. If people are resourceful enough, they can find ways to survive and to keep warm. Yes, blankets and warm clothing cost something, but they are more permanent. Once you have them, they last longer than the gas, oil or coal which is much more expensive and transitory. You have to keep on using it and pay for it every month, but an old mohair sweater or army blanket can last for decades with proper care.

Back them most people were farmers of some sort and used animal skins for warmth. They could also use hay as insulation. Body heat is also another great way to stay warm. Little House on the Prairie wasn't too far off the mark representing what things were like.

I haven't any idea about the pioneers, or whomever you're talking about. But I do have some suggestions for the penny pinching consumer.

-First, caulk the sides of you windows.
-Second, invest in space heaters and turn down the thermostat a couple of degrees. If you turn down the temperature just a couple of degrees you'll save 10% percent on your heating bill.
-Use the fire place as much as possible if it's wood burning.
-Assuming you don't have pets, turn down the thermostat dramtically while you're at work.

Hopefully this helps, good luck.

I don't know about back then, but what I do is wear a bunch of sweaters. And remember, only the top layer is visible so if you're wearing 3 layers, you can wear the top layer on the inside tomorrow, and then the bottom layer on the outside the day after.
