The Attack of a monster card (Atk), is the damage it can do to your opponent. The monster must be in attack mode, (Vertical and face up) to do any damage.

The Defense of a monster card (Def), is the amount it can repel. The monster must be in defense mode, (Horizontal) for it's Defense points to be applicable.

Damage calculation is as such.

Attack (Ark) > Attack of the opponents attack mode monster

Attack (Atk) < Attack or defense of Opponents monster, you take damage. Equal to the difference.

Attack (Ark) = Attack of monster both are destroyed, Defense neither are destroyed.

Attack (Ark) - Direct Damage to the open opponents life points

No Damage Calculations are made if the opponents monster is in defense mode. Its like hitting a wall. Unless the monster in which you are attacking with has the ability to do damage.

Example ( Monster with 1000 Ark hits a monster with 400, The opposing player looses 600 life points.)

Hope I Helped Clear this up for you.

Let's see... Atk points are the points of damage your monster can deal to an opponent. Your card must be in the attack position to attack the opponent. If your monsters atk is greater than your opponents then the difference is subtracted from their 8000 life points. If the monsters share the same Atk level and are in the attack position then they are both removed from play. If the opponents monster is in the defensive position and their Def is lower than your monsters then nothing happens. If its Def is less than your monsthers it will be removed from play. Hope this helps.

ATK is it's attack number.. how much damage it hits for when it is attacking...

DEF is it's defensive number... used when it is under attack by another player... how much something has to attack it for BEFORE it does any damage .. think of it as a damage blocker.. if it had 10 DEF and something hit it for only 8.. then it would take no damage .. but it it got hit for 15.. then it would take 5 damage.. 15-10=5

OOPS! Doh! wrong game! LOL! DEF is the number of points the monster can take before it dies. ATK is still how much it attacks

atk points show how much damage it can do
and def points shows how much damage is the maximum it can take.
for example:
if u had a blue eyes white dragon in attack mode
and ur opponent has a dark magician in def mode
blue eyes destroys it cuz it has more atk points then its def points

the atk of a monster determines the damage it can inflict to your opponent by attacking. it also determines the monster's strength.def on the other hand is the ability of a monster to defend. it can also inflict damage to your opponent. so before summoning them to the field, compare their atk and def first
