Whenever our school needs to raise money we sell dinners. Get a bunch of volenteers and make tons of BBQ(or chilli or something else),sidedishes, desserts, and can drinks. And sell tickets for BBQ plates in advance. It always works with us.

it depends on your skills, if you are good with people, perhaps you can organize a party for them, or make an event, you may have to talk to some performers into a deal. The deal might be that they get 20% of the revenue of the event. So you would have to make some brochures, do some marketing and make some tickets, sell them for $10 or $20 even more. Depends on the quality of the venue. You would need to find a large comfortable place, it may be outdoors.
If you bring in 100 people to your event, then you would make at a) $10 a ticket, $1000, minus $200 = profit $800
b) $20 a ticket, $2000, minus $400 = profit $1600

Contact a local realtor and ask them if they are doing mailings. You and your friend could label envelopes, put stamps on and stuff them for these folks. Only do it with local companies, no internet people.
Good Luck
(you could also call a wedding planner and let her know you would do it for wedding parties, prepare the invitations for mailing)
Good Luck
