What does the white stuff look like? Cottony and fluffy? Could be several things, like already mentioned here. Here's a link with photos. Check gill flukes, that's a parasite that hooks into their gills and can cause mucus.
If it looks fungusy, could be an actual fungus, or it could be a bacterial infection called columnaris. A product called PimaFix should work pretty good for the fungus or columnaris if that's what it is. And, be sure to do frequent partial water changes. If it's anything less then a 5 gallon aquarium, do those every other day to keep the water quality good. Also, a little aquarium salt wouldn't hurt either, the usual dosage recommended is 1 tablespoon for every 5 US gallons.
Good luck!

You probably overfed it and the rotted food got him sick. Change the water and add a little kosher (not table)salt. Try some Pima fix. It'll cost you more money and time than it's worth . Next time, Don;t overfeed and make sure the water is clean.

Betta fish are incredibly puzzling to reproduce. first of all, whether they look drawn to breeding, they'll maximum probable attack one yet another. very nearly 8 situations out of ten, they'll attack. 2nd of all, in the event that they do breed, they'll attack one yet another after the eggs are hatched. The women human beings and the male may additionally attack the greater youthful. once you are going to reproduce, then you definately could get yet another tank. there is likewise the subject of what to do with the greater youthful. there in many situations tend to be quite a few adult males besides as women human beings, and if so you will could desire to domicile the adult males one after the different from the ladies human beings and one yet another. you're able to have seen attempting, yet i would not propose it.

I did research this and there are drops that they sell you medicate your fish but you need to make sure you are treating the correct problem. I suggest this site:
www.healthybetta.com/easymeds
This site is very detailed about the fungus that your fish may have..
www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm
I would take pics of your fish and bring them to the pet store and ask them if they could recommend anything for it and compare what you found on here with what they tell you. Good luck!

-_-; it's not ick! I wish people would stop assuming every time a fish is sick it has ick.
sounds to me like a bacterial infection. you will need an antibiotic, so go to the pet store and look for something that treats bacterial infections. do a full water change and add whatever meds you buy to the new water.
good luck!
