The Pilot's Wife. This interesting book, is very true to life, the characters are fictitious, but as shown in this book, life is full of shocks, we often do not know our friends and partners well and they could be living a double life with other commitments, that we may never know of.
The Polished Hoe, by Austin Clarke. The book takes a look at Barbadian high society, also reveals that ' the other woman' in a love triangle, often is the loser, one with the problem, feelings of rejection, the social out-cast.

I just finished Eve Ensler's book titled "Insecure At Last." I highly recommend this small book, of about 200 pages. It took me by surprise because it is a once a personal memoir and a social commentary. Ensler tells of the life experiences that shaped her life and particularly the events of 9/11 as a New York resident. She also shares women's stories from a prison here in the states. to refuge camps, and conflicts from Bosnia to Afghanistan.
(Eve Ensler is the playwright who wrote and performed the "Vagina Monologues")

Here are some great books, how to make an american quilt, like water for chocolate, in the time of the butterflies, shark dialogues, and the hiding place. These are honestly beautiful books that you will want to read again and again.

If you like Kurt Vonnegut, Mark Twain, Richard Brautigan, Jack Kerouac, or Malcom Lowry read Earl Jesse Steven's autobiographical novel called "Red Bird Just Like this." It has all the elements you mentioned---and a few surprises.
