You don't mention your ethnicity but maybe that's the point. You shouldn't have to assimilate, but by the same token, ethnicity should not be right there in front of everything. Or simply lighten up and make a joke about whatever perceived ethnic peccadillo that's about to surface. If I knew what your culture was, I could give a better answer. Like if you were Canadian, for example, eh? Then I'd say give assimilation a chance. Just kidding.

The constant emphasis of ethncity superseding all else is very unbecoming especially in academic and professional environments.
One cannot and should not use the constant backup strategy of ethnicity being the prime mover to do things or say things they usually do in case things don't work out for them.
Also there is the other characteristic of assimilation for the greater good of all.
America could never have become this great if the Germans stuck to their language, or the Italians or the Irish (Gaelic) and so on. Just a quick glance around the world and the fallacy is supremely buttressed peppered with examples galore.
Should you chose to immigrate here you don't immigrate for yourself but that the emigrant country needs you.
So if you want to retain your culture, tradition, dress and religion and flaunt it, better stay back in your home country rather than making the host make changes to accommodate you.
Remember think of the greater good of your fellow citizens before that of yourself individually.

Tell them so are you, your too white. LOL Get cool, get down, come off it. Get some culture, waddaya think culture is. Cause I got class. Live a little. You need to get out more. How can I be white. OK, you be me and I'll be you for a while, it would be fun. Come on. Do it, do it, do it. Two cultures are better than one. like two heads are better than one. Because it's hard to learn how not to dance and be uptight. I don't know how to be predjudiced. Or I am being predjudiced, how more white can I get? Or search Yahoo Q&A for similar questions or answers.

what are you???
Im in high school and i still don't know everything that happens in this strange world, but what i can tell you is you shouldn't change who you are just to please others. you are who you are, and you came from a blessed family who rasied you with traditions that were passed down from so many generations. Im Hispanic and i am very traditional but i change some of everyday habits than how my relatives live since i live in a different country. but i don't change for other purposes that people discriminate me or tell me to be less ethnic. BE Proud of who you are... i am discriminated everyday since i am hispanic, you can see how we are treated... but look enthicity is what makes us so different. If we were all the same think how dull that would be...

They have no rights to say that to you. What you do is your business and telling you that you need to be more like everyone else is not right. Hold on to your background, I believe that we all need to know our roots. Everyone is different. Why would your ethnicity matter, it won't effect the way you work. If this is bothering you, talk to those people who said this to you, and approach a manager about it if it continues. It's just discrimination to me.

Looking out at a field of flowers . . . would a person say that flower is too colorful . . . to fancy . . . to unique ? Should a flower be less unique / colorful to blend in with the other equally beautiful yet more simplistic flowers ?
Your co-workers say you are " too ethnic " ? ! ! ! Let them talk, You keep being magnificently who you are. I'm, uniquely and beautifully so, a ' pasty white girl ' and I celebrate my own uniqueness. I'm more than my color . . . I am my own individual eclectic self.
Celebrate your own individual self and be who you are. Those others making those comments are, simply put, . . . silly.

there is nothing wrong with being ethnic. However in most work places a certain dress code is expected. Perhaps you 'stand out' in a negative way. If not, they should be ashamed.

If you don't find anything wrong with it than neither should anyone else. They are just jealous because you know more about your heritage than they do. And that is really discriminating to say anything like that to someone you work with. I would bluntly say it is my heritage and I will love it as much as I want. I can't help what I am, Can you?
