you have two choices as far as rc cars are concerned
a) gas powered
b) electric

gas powered rc cars can go to excess of (ive seen) 30mph, tho not as common as the electric they can be tuned VERY meticulusly. Also b/c they are not as common they are expensive.

Electric cars are more popular, therefor parts are easier to find for them. You can buy them anywhere fro 20$ to 120$. The only ones that ive seen that can be tuned meticulusly are the ones you can buy at radioshack...modacars i think there called.

The rc cars that ive bought, ive bought off of ebay. The parts that are not included or wernt sure how reliable they were I went to Books A Million and looked in the magazine section, theve usually had about 3 or 4 different kinds of magazines.

hope this helps. Oh one more thing...if you want to drift your gonna need alot of money for tires..trust me this is true in all forms being rc or real. i just went through a brand new set of kumos 3 days ago.
