Well...
The term gay is being over used and abused.
Now it's slang.
A lot of people usually teens, use it to describe either people or inanimate objects. (Though I still don't understand the why they describe why objects are gay. i.e. "Homework is so gay." Homework has no sexual orientation or emotions).
So gay is out.
Homosexual, would be more of an appropriate and polite way of saying, though I'm not sure about the shortened version of "homo".
Lesbian, is more gender specific, and is used mainly for females. I don't find it offensive, but some may.

gay = men, lesbian = women, homosexual = both. That's the only difference (in my opinion), so really depends on who or whom your focus is on.

i say all three..most of my friends are gay..they dont mind how i address the social environment..
