Not at all. That's why they don't tell women to stop smoking or drinking while pregnant. Oh wait, they DO tell women not to smoke or drink while pregnant. Just stop now, any potential damage is already done, but odds are the baby will be perfectly fine as long as you don't do it any more.

here is some real info hope this helps yah ;)

When you are four weeks pregnant, you have just gotten to the stage where you have missed your period. Many women are unaware that they are pregnant until this stage, and they take many medications and drink and smoke. Fortunately, nature has it arranged that nothing gets to the baby until about two weeks after ovulation, around the time of the missed period. So, the drinking that you did will not have affected your baby. Furthermore, there is no evidence that a single episode of binge drinking before you find out you're pregnant has any effect on the pregnancy. Remember, though, that medical science has not been able to pinpoint a safe level of alcohol intake during pregnancy, and therefore you should not drink from the time your pregnancy test is positive until your baby is born (or even after that, if you're breastfeeding). At the very least, limit your intake to the very occasional glass of wine, and only after you've completed the first trimester.
Cigarette smoking has been associated with difficulty conceiving in both the male and the female. But a few cigarettes early on will not harm the pregnancy. That said, you should definitely stop smoking before pregnancy, or as soon as you find out you're pregnant. Also, avoid being around people who are smoking (secondhand smoke). Pregnancy is a time to get healthy.

good luck with everything

Seems there is a lot of judgement coming from most answers. Obviously, if your pregnancy test is positive you should make every possible effort to quit smoking and drinking. But if you are only a few weeks along and didn't know, there is pobably not any damage to your baby. It is especially important not to drink alcohol during your first trimester when the brain is really forming and smoking is really horrid for all stages of pregnancy. I found I was pregnant and quit smoking within one week, also had been doing a bit of drinking and my 3 1/2 year old is GREAT, no health problems at all...ask your doctor but if you are just barely a few weeks along, I wouldn't worry about it. And SHAME on all you "perfect" people out there who are so quick to condemn someone who is clearly trying to do the right thing.

Of course drinking and smoking will affect your child. STOP NOW!! I how ever had a bad drug addiction when I first found out about my pregnancy, and it was the hardest thing to do, to quit. I went to drug rehab, I went to jail, and I have been clean for over a year now. Just seeing this precious baby, and seeing that she wasn't affected by my addiction is the only reason I needed to stay clean. It may and May not affect the child, but I do believe it will, maybe not at first, but some things do not show up until the child is in school, and so fourth. If ya can't stop partying keep your legs shut! I don't believe in abortion, and I don't believe in giving a child up for adoption that you have chose to abuse. If you go to the doctor and test positive for anything, you will be arrested, and when baby is born, they automatically do drug screenings on you and baby, if any positive traces, the baby will be taken, and so will you!

YES If you are currently pregnant-sound like you are---keep in mind, whatever you, mom, eat/drink, put in your body smoking, etc. will go to the baby first, then you get the leftovers. Your responsibility begins now-to take excellent care of that child. Smoking can cause a lower birth weight for the child, (and I found out some birth defects), and drinking--oh boy! Yes, that can cause birth defects too-like fetal alcohol syndrome-if you are a heavy drinker. With all of the knowledge we have now about how things can and do effect the baby-please stop smoking and drinking-asap. Please, at the mention of possible birth defects-don't abort this little one,. Eat healthy, drink lots of water 8 - 8 oz. glasses per day, and at least lay off the booze. And try to quit the smoking too. Take care.

From my understanding, research has not yet been able to tell us how much alcohol is damaging to the embryo or fetus. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a condition which babies can develop.

Research does tell us that the first 3 months of embryonic development is the time when it is most sensitive to toxins.

As far a smoking goes, it has been correlated with a lower birth weight in the newborn.

It makes sense to avoid smoking and alcohol if there is even a slight chance of pregnancy.

If you really want to know the truth, straight up from a nursing reference book, it depends on how far along you are. The majority of heart defects in a fetus occur during the 3-6 week period of pregnancy. The earlier on you are in the pregnancy, the less effect it will have, but not to say that the drinking is OK. Hopefully now that you know you are pregnant, you will stay away from those types of things. Good luck and congratulations!!!!

ok i don't know whats with everyone giving you the 4th degree obviously you are concerned and no it won't really hurt your baby you didn't know and it couldn't have been for too long you must stop now but it takes a while for the baby to implant in you and your body is very protective of your baby the first bit bc there is the possiblity that you don't know yet you've probably only been pregnant for 2 weeks if you just found out bc you missed your period and if you had drinkin that much your body would have made you puke don't worry about whats already done just look towards the future

If you lay off the smokes and only a little bit on the drinking side it is not likely your baby will be affected but dont smoke during your pregnancy it can cause harm

Yes, it can affect your baby. At least quit drinking, that is easier to do than smoking. Talk to your doctor about the best way to quit smoking if you can't do it on your own. I'm 25 weeks, and had to use the patch to quit. I'm still having trouble though. Good luck.
