I think you are totally right. Your Mom should let you have a hamster or gerbil. Let her know that you will take good care of it and clean the cage, feed it. Tell her you will keep your room clean, so she want have to go in your room, keep the hamster or gerbil in there. If you have a Grand mother, try to get her own your side, Grandmothers sometime are a little more understanding and might can talk to your mom about this. Tell her to at least give you a chance. If she does, prove you are a person that takes care of their pet.

Your parents know you better than we do, so if they said no, there must be a reason other than they don't like their looks! I've heard all the "I'll do this and I'll do that and you won't have to do anything at all, I promise." Now, I am feeding, cleaning, paying for shots and everything else, on top of working, fixing meals, etc. This is a true story, I kid you not. When my daughter was about your age, maybe a little younger, she wanted a hamster or gerbil (I really don't remember which). Anyway, she went to pet it or feed it and it bit her. I called the health department and was told that as long as it didn't die within 10 days, my child would be fine. Well, the darn thing did die! It was a weekend, so I called somewhere (again, it's been years and I don't remember where I called) and they said the only thing I could do was to call the police. So, I called and told them what happened. They sent an officer out, who was totally freaked out. We both just stared at each other in disbelief, and he told me he was told to take the animal to the morgue and that he had to give it a name. It had to have an autospy to make sure it didn't die from rabies, and since everything else was closed, they had to keep the little critter at a certain temperature and that the only place available then was the morgue. To make a long story short, it died of natural causes. Have I ever gotten another hamster or gerbil? NO!!! But, I have had pet rats, dogs, cats, pygmy goats, snakes, etc. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting a hamster or gerbil, but, are you really ready for all that responsibility?

I had a hamster and it might be hard for someone young to take care of one. you have to make sure their water is clean and their cage is too. If you don't keep your hamster's environment clean it will die. It would be tough too because you are young and probably like going out with friends a lot. Im not saying you are not responsible or anything but taking good care of a hamster may be time consuming.

Do you have friends who have these pets? Maybe both of you could go over to their house, and their mom could show her that it is no problem, especially if you prove that you are mature enough to take care of it.
