Because they got rid of Mischa Barton, who practically was the center of the show. The oc's ratings go down because of the loss of viewers who are busy watching American Idol.

Its ratings have significantly decrease since Mischa Barton left the show. The change is so drastic that Fox feels it would better to end the show than to continue it.

It turned into a soap opera... Too bad, it was kinda cute in the begining. They probably fired the people who wrote the script, and they are getting revenge writing scripts for Grey's Anatomy... :)
