The cord won't even pull... it seems to be locked. (on both) The gas mix was a little old... perhaps 4 months. Both ran just fine until empty, with the same gas. They ran out of gas. I refilled them and discovered I could not pull the cord. They are both totally impossible to pull even an couple inches. Is this a 'seized' engine, or something more simple? I haven't yet tried again after cooling. One is 25 years old and one is about 5 years, no previous problems.
If this is something really bad and easy to diagnose, what can I do to prevent this if I purchase a new chain saw? Thanks!

As a chainsaw mechanic, the first thing it to take out the spark plug. Once it is our, see if you can pull the cord. The chain brake should only affect the chain, and not the running of the engine. If the cord can be pulled, then pull it several dozen times to clear out the cylinder. When you mix your gas, use an oil that has stabilizer in it, and mix only a gallon at a time. If you cannot pull the cord, then you should have the saws looked at by a local professional.

Please keep us posted!! (I want to know the ultimate resolution.)

Taking out the spark plug (to relieve any compression) and gently pulling the start rope (as has already been suggested) seems like a good starting point. Generally I think (with spark plug removed) the pull should be almost effortless. If not, then squirt some 20 or 30 wt oil into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole and try it.

Tho this is not related...I've generally gotten the impression from small engine mechanics that stale gas can be a big nuisance, something to avoid or address if at all possible. (Avoid by buying small amts fresh and using within 2 wks; address by adding rather expensive chemical stabilizer to your fresh bought gas.)

I hope it is just the chain break--I've panicked on that before myself. But I wouldn't think the brake would be locked on both and don't know if the one that is 25 years old would even have one.

Are you absolutely sure you used mixed gas? It's easy to pick up the wrong can. They probably would have locked up on you before running out of gas tho.

Try removing the spark plug and then slowly pull on the rope.

Did you make sure the gas was well mixed? I.e., shake it up a little? The oil may have settled and not gotten into the saws.

The chain brake is on. The handle that you pick it up with , push it forward ( the chain brake) and then pull the rope.
