Teach yourself!! Then you will adapt your own style instead of following someone elses.

There is a wealth of knowledge on the internet to get you started. Read up on proper technique and fingering.I would also recommend buying one of those posters that show common chords. Google is your best friend!

Learn to read "TAB's" and download the ones from your favorite songs. Learn to play one or a few songs, and move on to something more difficult. Pay attention to the patterns you encounter.

I would also recommend reading up on music theory and learning how to read music. You will then learn how chords are constructed, key signatures, intervals, and other important topics.

I am teaching myself how to play piano since all western music and music theory is based on one (even electric guitar). I would recommend doing the same.

Best advice I could offer you is go onto youtube and look up beginner electric guitar videos. If you had asked for acoustic guitar advice for starter's I'd be able to help you, but I've heard learning acoustic vs. electric is pretty different. That being said, maybe it'll help anyways. When I first started to learn acoustic, I first started with finger exercises, mostly to get my fingers used to pressing down on strings, getting flexible, and building up calluses on your fingertips (you'll want these, trust me). Then, I started learning some basic chords for songs, like G, C, A, Em, Am (I stayed away from bar chords since it was a little more advanced). Next, I did some very basic fingerpicking songs to help moving my fingers around on the guitar more and getting more control over my right hand for the guitar. Since then I've basically just slowly been working my way up, learning fingerpicking songs and progressively learning harder and harder tabs. Also learned to play bar chords somewhere between that, as it's a necessity (I've heard for electric bars are even more important). Anyways, hopefully that will help some. Good luck playing!

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMSq5 It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

I just started by learning how to read guitar tabs, and then I just went with it. I'm one of the better players of my musician friends, but sometimes I wish that I could have had professional lessons. I did a few things with sloppy technique by myself, and had to go over to fix them.

On the other hand, I also hear that you become a more creative player if you teach yourself.

Try looking at your nearest music/guitar store. My bro did and now he's like a pro! Or you could practice on Guitar Hero!!
