The British version of the Office can represent the office workers of England.

Not all btw. I'm watching The Fades now on BBC America and Downton Abbey is very popular here. The Inbetweeners was popular too. A show like The Office (American version) set in Scranton PA just presents more opportunities for American inside humor. The setting of that show makes it perfect for America. Half of that joke and why that show is ridiculously funny is that it takes place in Scranton and all the nonsense that goes on in Scranton -- you have to see that, or maybe you don't, maybe you've never been to Scranton or heard of Scranton. If you had I think you would realize why they picked it and why sometimes, just tweeking a show for a different audience can make a big difference in its success. LOL -- Scranton.

Eastenders is a miserable programme. I don't think it portrays the people of east London in a realistic or good way. Then again if it did nobody would watch it. If you want to see real life go stand at the end of your street.

It changes with time, Auf Weidersehn Pet was a good example of real Brits, film wise Trainspotting depicts drug users in Edinburgh very accurately, i don't know that life is as depressing in Britain as Eastenders depicts. Shameless i agree with the comment above is a good marker of working and classes today.

I doubt that any of them have any reality to peoples lives in Britain. These are all soap shows and are thus written to reflect what the writers want shown. I would take all these shows with a 'Pinch of Salt'.
