Keeping society at arms length is really getting pandemic. We live in culture of treatment resistant bacterial strains in addition to the little fact that sex can kill. As far as keeping reality at arms length, I don't know, need you to be more specific. I think we've distanced from death as a society by virture of making it sterile... not like in the old daze... IDK. BRB.. gotta go watch the Surreal Life/Survivior/JoeMillonaire reunion special

On both the left and the right. Creationism/ID on the religious right and postmodernism and relativism on the left, for a couple of examples. Trouble is, reality has a way of coming into sharp relief for all that try to keep it at arms length.

So much is going on around us that we can't keep up with all of the things going on.

So more & more to cope we tend to disreguard or keep some things at arms length.

Absolutely. People only want to hear about the good things (ie. flowers and kittens) but want to ignore or deny the existance of the bad things (ie. war, death, poverty, crime, suicide). People need to wake up and realise that the world is not a wonderful place and that people are inherently evil.
