I know, that Cortez conquered them, and killed many of them, but were disease brought by Cortez and co. a MAJOR cause of the Aztecs' fall?

During a period of six months, smallpox killed a third of the inhabitants of the Valley of Mexico. Nevertheless, the conquest of the Aztecs was still a desperate and bloody campaign. Such a substantial loss in population must surely be considered a MAJOR factor.

they were a significant factor in the fall of the Aztecs. Interestingly though is that the Aztecs were at their weakest when Cortez arrived - and many regional areas were looking at rebelling against the Aztec Empire. Had Cortez not arrived maybe the Aztecs would still have fallen as they were weakened through constant war and a declining population.
