I have a fireplace that's well built and a metal roof....how dangerous are chimney fires? Other factors are most of the trees are conifers and are 20 or more feet away from the chimney.

Chimney fires are hazardous because when one occurs, often the fire in the chimney will vent out through any little chinks in the chimney's mortar, often into an attic and start a fire inside the house.
True, sparks flying from the chimney can be hazardous too, but most of the time you can prevent that by putting a good fitting chimney cap on top of the chimney, and burning good, slow burning wood...not pine or other woods that tend to flare up.

i believee most chimmney fires have something to do with the flue. Keep it well maintained and of course use a screen guard. also i would keep a fire extinguisher handy if the worst should occur. not the best answer by far but maybe that helpd a little.
