No, I don't believe that it is possible. I don't believe in astral projection or anything. I'm guessing it's one of two things:
1) Kinda like a deja vous, which occurs when there is significant lapse between your eyes seeing the picture and the time your brain processes it. This gives you a feeling of familiarity, which you might chalk up as a dream if you have never been to the place.
2) Many psychologists argue that there is no actual sight or sound in a dream, just feelings that you get from a neural impulse firing randomly. That essentially states that dreams are often random and have no actual meaning or significance. It is possible that a dream actually recreated a place that actually existed, and you just happed to see a picture of something very similar to that dream. It's improbable, true. Then again, since you are one of the only people that I have heard this happening to, the odds don't rule it out. Furthermore, due to the nature of the impulses, it is possible that the dream was just a feeling created by a neuron, and the picture happened to stimulate the same neuron firing that the dream did. Freaky science, huh?
I don't know if you buy those explanations, but they are a lot more rational than the psychic explanations that are the alternative.

Yes it is possible,,,it is called remote viewing and the government has studied this during world war 2 I believe and you can look it up on line...
But, I bet that sometime even if it was many years ago, you looked at pictures of california, but it was so long ago that you do not remember, but somewhere in your subconsious, pulled it up into your dream.

Dream is an extension of thought process during sleep. Thoughts reflect our unfulfilled desires and hopes also. The ideal situation for thoughts to develop as desired is in sleep Which comes out as dream. Memory plays tricks as though you have been to places which you have seen in dreams.

Many advocates of astral projection say it's possible. I can't definitely say for certain as to whether I do though.
If you want to see if what you've experienced matches up with astral projection, check out the link in my sources.
