The end of the oil supply isn't like turning off a spigot - instead, it will happen... indeed, is already beginning to happen... very slowly, as petroleum producers have to turn to more expensive and difficult to extract sources of petroleum (like the Canadian oil shale.)
*
So the oil won't exactly run out - it will just get more and more expensive, until people finally decide to stop using so much of it.
*
With that in mind, people may eventually discover that electric cars aren't so bad. If you're willing to put solar panels on your garage roof, you can even drive around for free.
*
Here's a real interesting electric car, based on new battery research from MIT. This is not just a concept car - Phoenix has taken orders and they begin building cars this month:

*
The Phoenix gets up to 250 miles per charge, carries 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph, can charge in only ten minutes, and the batteries will last over 200,000 miles.

There has recently been a discovery of oil in Canada where there is enough oil supply for the entire world to last for 100 years.
Consider that and additionally the oil we have from the Middle East. It will be at least another 100 - 200 years until we can use it up--but I wouldn't depend on the numbers considering overpopulation will play a large affect to oil consumption rates.
Still, we have not yet uncovered all the earth has to offer. We continue to make more and more discoveries.

In regards to the automotive industry, I'd say there isn't much likelihood of us using up all the oil. Especially with all the synthetics on the market. However, there are factories, power plants, etc. that still use fossil fuels today. If I had to guess, I'd say that we will deplete our oil resources within the next one hundred years. But if you really want concrete documentation, I'd start doing some research.

Now that so many new cars use synthetic oil, how long do you think it's going to take? F-O-R-E-V-E-R!! And look at how many oil companies are making synthetic oil. Hmmmm. God Bless you.
